Steve Carrell has ruled himself out of a sensational return to The Office.
The sitcom fast became one of America's most successful shows when the British comedian Ricky Gervais adapted the British series for U.S. audiences. The hit show made stars of its cast, including the now A-list actor Steve Carrell.
However, Carrell will not be returning to the series that launched his career.
Speaking with TIME magazine, Carrell stated that he had no intention of playing Michael Scott again-despite admitting that he "loves the role too much."
"I've never thought of it as a good idea. I think it existed in that time and with those people and it felt right," he said.
"There was something so special about it, and I guess it's an odd way to put it, but I love it too much to ever want to do it again. It's too special to me in my heart in that period of time."
Still, the Big Short star looks back fondly on his time on the show.
"I remember it was the first week we were shooting the pilot, and Jenna [Fischer] and John [Krasinski] and Rainn [Wilson] and I went out to lunch... just the four of us," he recalled.
"We were sitting in this little diner in Culver City, and I remember saying, 'Guys, if this works, this could be the most special thing that any of us are ever involved with.'"
Despite Carrell's words, other cast members appear open to the idea. John Krasinski, who also made a name for himself on the show and has since gotten married to the British actress Emily Blunt, admitted to Indiewire that the prospect of returning to his character was something he relished. "I love that idea, coming back [and] finding out where everybody is. I would totally be down for that."
The series ended in 2013, though NBC has always remained open to returning to the series in some capacity.
NBC president Bob Greenblatt even said that he had held talks with the show's creator over a possible reboot. "I've talked to Greg four times over the past few years. It's always, 'Maybe someday, but not now.'"
Are you an avid fan of The Office? If so, do you think a reboot would be any good without the Carrell?
