She Was Told Her Birthmark Looked Ugly, But She Decided To Keep It For A Special Reason

Tearjerkers May 9, 2017 By Hugo

In an era where apps like Tinder and Instagram dictate what's beautiful and what isn't, it isn't hard to see how shallow modern-day society has become and even the supermodel Cara Delevigne spoke at about the issue and shaved her hair off in protest at people's fascination with a conventional type of beauty.

Yes, the definition of beauty has become a hot topic in recent years, so it's hardly surprising that a story about a young Brazilian woman with a birthmark went viral.

The reason? People openly told the 24-year-old Mariana Mendes that her birthmark was ugly and that she should have it removed.

In a story that makes you want to find those horrible people and tell them how wrong they are, Mariana Mendes rose above their insults and responded in stunning fashion by arranging a fantastic model shoot to make a strong statement about what it means to be beautiful.

The birthmark covers part of Mariana's nose, her right eye, and her right cheek and stems from a rare condition called congenital melanocytic nevus, which is estimated to impact just one in every 20,000 babies.

Caused by higher than usual levels of pigment beneath the skin, the affected area appears significantly darker than normal.

To rectify the problem, Mariana underwent rounds of laser surgery treatments when just 5-years-old to reduce the nevus due to her mother fearing bullies would pick on her.

While the operations were partly successful, doctors couldn't remove the entire mark, but years later, and despite continued questions from strangers the stylist assistant finally decided to embrace her unique feature.

“I feel more beautiful and totally different from other people because I have a nevus,” said Mariana.

“There are many people who stare and who don’t like it, but I don’t care. I have been told by a few people that it’s “ugly” or “strange”, but it doesn’t bother me. That’s just their opinion, and I think it’s beautiful."

"A lot of people ask me about my birthmark, sometimes they think it’s makeup or a tattoo, but I don’t mind and explain it to them. I’m proud of having a nevus; it’s a part of who I am and how I learn to like myself.”

Speaking about others with the condition, Mariana hopes the shoot will inspire others with similar conditions to be more accepting of their appearance rather than let the opinions of others impact on their self-esteem.

"I find living with a facial nevus very easy because I like it a lot and I want others to feel as confident as I do about their nevi.I will never be ashamed of my nevus and feel good having it," she added.
