Following last month's release of Avengers: Endgame, Marvel fans were left with both excitement and trepidation over the future of some of the cinematic universes' most beloved characters.
One of those whose future appeared unclear was Marvel's star man, Tony Stark, played by the ever-charismatic Robert Downy Jr.
With his lucrative contract coming to an end, Downey's future as Iron Man already looked over and judging by the new trailer, it appears he won't be reprising his most famous role to date.
The trailer sees Stark drifting infinitely through space as he prepares to record a final message for his fiancee Pepper Potts. This would appear to suggest an ominous end for one of Marvel's most enduring characters.
"Dear Miss Potts," Stark says. "If you find this recording don't feel bad about this, part of the journey is the end. Just for the record, being adrift in space with zero promise of rescue is more fun than it sounds.
"Food and water ran out four days ago, oxygen will run out tomorrow morning and I mean it, when I drift off I will dream about you, it's always you."
Marvel's vast legion of fans have since expressed their concern online about the superhero billionaire's future, with one fan exclaiming on social media, "Can't accept that."
Another wrote, "Well, renew the contract. Simple as that I won't take no for an answer."
It was only last year that one of America's most celebrated actors told the press that he wanted to end his stint on a high. "I just never want to blow it for the last six or seven [Marvel movies] I have done by dropping the ball because I decided to go do it one more time. I just want to hang up my jersey before it's embarrassing."
Downey's likely departure looks likely to coincide with fellow Marvel actor Chris Evans, who played the role of Captain America for 8 years before stepping down from the role late last year.
