Shane Godfrey of Sandford North Carolina has a unique friendship with his pet dog Willie, and the two have been inseparable ever since he was found abandoned as a puppy on Shane's front porch early last year.
However, dogs require round-the-clock attention, and that was something Shane couldn't offer once his illness saw him hospitalized for over 5 weeks.
Godfrey's stay in hospital began with a suspected case of the flu. But Godfrey soon found his flu transforming into double pneumonia to even more severe conditions, which included kidney failure, sepsis, and encephalitis. At one point, doctors even feared for his life.
"They weren't sure if I would make it for a while," Godfrey admitted when talking to the animal news agency, the dodo. Because of the rapid decline in health, Shane lost a considerable amount of weight.
Godfrey looked a shadow of his former self, and it didn't help his cause to know that his beloved pooch- who was being looked after by his sister- had no idea what was happening, so all he could do was hang on in there.
In that time, poor old Godfrey was eager to get back to his life, so when the day finally did come to go home, his reunion with Willie must have felt like magic.
But it didn't quite go as planned.
Willie didn't recognize his loving owner due to his severe weight loss, and it took a good minute or so for Willie's nose to hesitantly connect with Godfrey's leg before he finally realized from his scent that he had his owner back.
"I had lost 50 pounds in the hospital and am sure I looked different," he said. "At first he was unsure and barked at me, but once he got close enough to smell me, he recognized me immediately and totally went wild with excitement. It still makes me tear up when I see the video."
Unsurprisingly, Willie now follows his owner wherever he goes "He won't leave my side now that I've gotten back home." Godfrey admitted.
On behalf of the whole team at OMG Lane, we hope it stays that way!
