Dame Helen Mirren is an icon and legend in the film industry having won an Oscar for playing The Queen of England and then becoming a Dame and thus genuinely getting to meet the Queen! She has been in so many great films and TV shows that she has rightfully earned her place as an icon and so some were a little surprised to see her crop up in the latest installment of the over the top car come action series The Fast and The Furious earlier this year when she played the mother of former enemies turned family members of the team, Deckard (Jason Statham) and Owen (Luke Evans).
It was only a small cameo but it was a cool little moment to see such a highly lauded actress hamming up a ridiculous cockney stereotype opposite the vest wearing muscles of Vin Diesel and his archetypal hard-an whisper growl. It wasn't Oscar worthy but it was fun. However, the superstar hasn't ruled out a return to the franchise but revealed in a recent interview that she would do it on one condition.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the 72-year-old expressed her desire to be seen behind the steering wheel if she were ever to reprise her matriarchal role and why the heck not, she is Dame Helen Mirren and she can do whatever she likes, a sentiment she expressed when saying:
“I’d love to come back. But, guys, I want to drive next time.”
Whether there are any plans to include her character again are yet to be seen but it is expected to be at least two more films in the franchise whilst a spinoff starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham is also supposedly in the works where their characters have a sort of buddy-cop adventure. Given the Mirren's character is the mother of Statham's, it could be that her role arises again organically in this film too but details are thin on the ground at the moment.
