Despite Hollywood packaging love in layers of sentimental gloss and ramming it down our throats in the form of countless Nicholas Sparks movies, romances in La La Land, just like anywhere else, rarely have happy endings.
So to make you feel good about your long-standing bitterness towards your ex, we've listed 10 former celebrity couples who still haven't managed to amicably move on and settle their differences.
1. Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears
These former lovebirds got together when their careers were beginning to rocket having both known each other as child performers on Disney's Micky Mouse Club. But rather than it ending in a fairytale marriage, Justin's childhood sweetheart cheated on him, which is what the hit track Cry Me A River was about.
After Timberlake found out about Britney doing the nasty with someone else, he quickly moved on with Cameron Diaz (as you do) while Britney married childhood sweetheart Jason Alexander.
And while the two were rumored to be collaborating on a song together last year, those rumors were soon quashed when the two were both in London, with inside sources admitting that they were keen to avoid each other at all costs, despite the relationship ending over 14 years ago.
2. Zayn Malik and Perrie Edwards
Zayn Malik hated everything about being in One Direction, despite the band making him very wealthy. But it seemed his annoyances in the latter stages of his 1D career weren't solely because of the music. Since 2011, just a year after 1D formed, he had been dating Little Mix's Perrie Edwards, and two got engaged shortly after, but it appeared that once Malik left the band, he also wanted to terminate his relationship with Edwards.
And after cheating rumors continued to plague the relationship, Malik called things off via TEXT MESSAGE, and quickly found love with Gigi Hadid, modeling's new It girl.
No doubt a knock to Edward's confidence, Malik then went on to say how refreshing it was to have an intelligent conversation with a girlfriend and talk about politics, a passive-aggressive dig at Edwards's intelligence, no doubt.
But hey, Edwards did perform their smash hit Shout Out To My Ex while Malik was in attendance at one of those glitzy award shows, but we doubt Malik cared.
3. Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston
Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston can pretty much have anyone they want for obvious reasons, so when these two finally found love and marriage, it appeared as though they would live happily ever after and have loads of beautiful children. But for Brad, Aniston's appeal soon waned, and he was dissatisfied with the way his life was going with the Friends star, as he revealed in an interview, in which he admitted, " he "wasn't living an interesting life," and was "trying to pretend the marriage was something that it wasn't."
Poor Jen! Not only did Brad leave her for Angelina Jolie while STILL MARRIED, but he also made out she was as dull as they came, even though we all know Jen is sweet and lovely (according to her interviews with Ellen De Generes).
Anyway, Jen had the last laugh, as shortly after Jolie divorced Pitt, Jen told US Weekly, "That's Karma for you."
4. Jesse James and Sandra Bullock
Jesse James was already punching way above his weight when he married Sandra Bullock, but then again maybe Bullock has a thing for bad guys because all James ever seemed to do in that relationship was put her down in public.
Take his interview with the obnoxious, loud-mouthed, yet somehow much-beloved radio host, Howard Stern. When asked who was better in bed out of ex-wife Bullock and fiance, Kat Von D. James, he picked D. James and wasn't shy as to explain why. "That one's an easy no-brainer. 100 percent! She's a vixen, man. I love her." He's also referred to Bullock in other interviews as just a "Hollywood actress."
5. Madonna and Guy Ritchie
Madonna and Guy Ritchie were married for eight years before things turned sour, and nowadays you only hear about the couple concerning their custody battle over son Rocco or the individual vendettas both hold towards each other.
Taking the hate up a notch, Madonna even dedicated the song, Miles Away to the "emotionally retarded" director, though Ritchie replied in an Esquire interview, "She's retarded too!"
And there was us thinking all adults are sensible.
6. Taylor Swift and every one of her exes
Taylor Swift has made millions from writing weepy breakup songs about guys who supposedly did her wrong, so to deviate from that tried and tested formula wouldn't make sense, would it?
Thus, Swift has had the pleasure of penning songs about various exes over the years, including Calvin Harris, Harry Styles, John Mayer and Jake Gyllenhall. Though Scottish DJ Harris wasn't going out without a fight when Swift dumped him shortly after he'd been involved in a car crash, tweeting, "I know you're off tour and you need someone new to try and bury like you did with Katy ETC but I'm not that guy, sorry. I won't allow it."
Harry Styles even sang a verse in the One Direction single Perfect which was thought to be a snipe at Swift's love of the spotlight. It went, "If you like cameras flashing every time we go out, oh yeah, and if you're looking for someone to write your break-up songs about, Baby I'm perfect."
7. Peter Cook and Christine Brinkley
Anyone lucky to look as good as Christine Brinkley does in their 60s will certainly have to thank God and their obsession with anti-aging products, but even Brinkley's age-defying looks did little to hide, in Cook's opinion, at least, a "narcissist."
Yep, Cook hasn't shied away from publicly calling her every name under the sun since the divorce, going as far as labeling her a "narcissistic egomaniac" and a liar.
8. Oksana Grigorieva and Mel Gibson
Mel Gibson has said a lot of mean and controversial things over the years, and we guess that applied to his former wife Oksana Grigorieva, who claimed Gibson was a "rich bully."
For most people in Hollywood, they'll likely agree with that statement.
9. Olivia Wilde and Tao Ruspoli
In what has to be one of the worst put downs on this list, the beautiful and talented actress Olivia Wilde didn't hold back when asked by an interviewer about her past relationship with the American filmmaker Tao Ruspoli.
"I felt like my vagina died. It just turned off. Lights out," she said.
Talk about knocking a man when he's down, Olivia!
10. Rita Ora and Rob Kardashian
We all know who the pop star Rita Ora is, and if you've had the privilege of watching Keeping Up With The Kardashians, then you'll know that Rob is a sock entrepreneur (yes, really) as well as an annoying reality tv star who somehow managed to win over Ora.
But it didn't end well. Much like Rob's issues with Blac Chyna, his problems with Ora led to their break-up, with Ora publicly admitting, "Rob's d*** was wack, I had to get it somewhere else."
