Dry January is now a distant memory. And let's be honest; most of us only said no to alcohol for one month because we overdid it at Christmas. However, some people have made it their new lifestyle choice to eradicate drink from their lives forever just like these 30 celebrities.
Strong-minded or in some cases, simply keen to preserve their good looks, it seems we could all learn a thing from these clean-living stars.
1. Tyra Banks
The former supermodel is still looking good well into her 40s, and as well as sticking to a strict exercise and diet, the America's Next Top Model judge admitted that she has never touched alcohol as an adult.
Aside from her first taste of alcohol aged 12, the fashion mogul told fans that she has never had anything to drink since.
2. Brad Pitt
Brad Pitt hasn't had it easy in recent years following his divorce from fellow actor Angelina Jolie, and for a good year, Pitt went largely into hiding.
Thankfully, Pitt looks much better and credits sobriety with helping him get back on his feet. Speaking to U.S. Weekly, Pitt admitted he "didn't want to live that way anymore" and though joy is still an "elusive thing" for him since his heartbreaking split from Angelina Jolie, being sober has given him "feeling in his fingertips again."
3. Rob Lowe
Rob Lowe may be in his 50s- but you wouldn't' have thought it. Indeed, the actor credits three decades of sobriety as the reason he has maintained his Hollywood good looks, despite also saying in the past that good looking people are discriminated against in the industry.
Lowe quit drinking when he was 26 after years of heavy partying. Speaking about his decision to give up, Lowe said, "Being in recovery has given me everything of value that I have in my life."
4. Mike Posner
The singer famously admitted that he took a pill in Ibiza to show Avicii he was cool, but Posner also revealed in a 2015 tweet that his excessive drinking was also proving an issue.
The tweet was linked to a revealing article on the subject of sobriety and Posner's experiences with it. "I couldn’t let alcohol rob me of enjoying my life’s special moments," he said.
5. Joe Manganiello
While Joe Manganiello may possess a towering height and the body of a Greek God- physical attributes that would allow Manganiello to handle his drink pretty easily- he has remained sober for 11 years.
Speaking about his life as a jobbing actor, the Magic Mike star explained that it was a lack of finances that encouraged him to go sober. "I was homeless, careless and broke with no career, so yes, it was worth it [to get sober]."
6. Ben Affleck
Ben Affleck hasn't exactly endeared himself to the press during his time in Tinseltown, with cheating scandals and harassment allegations often levied against the Academy-Award winning actor and director.
As well as this, Affleck has struggled with drink and has twice checked into a rehab facility. Now teetotal, Affleck even brought his sober coach to The Oscars. When asked why he said he wanted to "be the best father he can be."
7. Lucy Hale
The gorgeous Pretty Little Liars actress revealed to Instyle that her insecurities spawned from the industry social life forced her to embrace her real self and not rely on alcohol. She also decided to cut off most of her hair and have it in a bob.
" I tried really hard to be the social butterfly," the actress said. Be yourself, guys!
8. Jennifer Hudson
A strict Christian and destined for stardom from an early age, it's little wonder this awe-inspiring crooner has said no to alcohol.
Speaking to party-lover Chelsea Handler on her Netflix show, Hudson confessed, "I've never been interested. Nobody ever believes it."
9. Jim Carrey
Jim Carrey definitely doesn't need alcohol to be the life of the party, but his dependency on it drew him into a spiral of depression.
"Life is too beautiful," Carrey said when asked we had given it up. To aid his clean lifestyle, Carrey strays away from many other substances too, including caffeine.
10. Sarah Silverman
Another comedian on our list, Sarah Silverman, like Carrey, also suffers from depression, and has done since her teens, yet chooses to stray from alcohol consumption for gastronomic reasons.
"I try all the time," Silverman said, yet because of her "Jewish stomach", she rarely engages in it.
11. Bradley Cooper
Bradley Cooper has always been incredibly ambitious, and you only have to watch him as a drama student asking a question to Robert DeNiro in an episode of Jame Lipton's Inside The Actor's Studio to see that Cooper was determined to make it.
So determined was he, Cooper even gave up drinking to dedicate himself to his craft. "I wasn't going to live up to my potential, and that scared the hell out of me," Cooper said, who has now been sober for over 12 years.
12. Russell Brand
Russell Brand has come a long way since his days as a heroin addict and alcoholic in his twenties. Still labeling himself an addict, Brand described himself as a "nightmare to be around" and even stole from his grandmother's pension at his lowest point in life.
However, Brand has now turned his life around, and today, the actor, comedian and political activist is one of the most woke celebrities. He even released a self-help book called "Recovery" helping people overcome a variety of addictions.
13. Robert Downey Jr.
After coming to prominence at an early age, Robert Downey Jr. went off the rails, indulging in all kinds of narcotics with the money he was given, though he had first dabbled in drugs at just 8-years-old.
Thankfully, Downey Jr. has turned his life around and has been sober for more than 10 years following various stints in prison and rehab.
To many, the Iron Man's comeback is the greatest in Hollywood.
14. Jennifer Lopez
Unlike most others on this list, Lopez has refrained from drinking for beauty reasons rather than because of addiction.
"I think it ruins your skin," the hitmaker said in one interview. The only time Lopez drinks is during celebratory toasts.
15. Tim McGraw
One of country music's biggest stars is human after all after admitting that he often needed "liquid courage" to perform in front of audiences.
However, such a dependency on alcohol made McGraw realize it was affecting his relationship with his family and friends, and thus decided to do away with drink altogether.
16. Natalie Portman
Natalie Portman is a natural beauty who always looks radiant, so it's little wonder she is teetotal! Like most of us, Portman enjoyed a drink or two in college but decided to ditch alcohol after she graduated.
"I didn’t really go to high school parties, and yeah, I didn’t touch pot till I was in my 20s... I didn't get flat-out drunk until I went to college. But I think that's a good thing in many ways," the Black Swan star said.
17. Elton John
You don't get many bigger names in the music industry than Elton John. The British pop crooner has been wowing us for decades with some of the most beautiful songs in history, but when he first came onto the scene, his newfound fame was hard to deal with, and like most stars, he used alcohol and drugs as a coping mechanism.
Thankfully, John has been sober for 29 years after being moved by the AIDS epidemic in the 90s. “Within six months I became sober and clean." he said.
18. Demi Lovato
Demi Lovato has been in and out of rehab because of issues with drugs and alcohol, but she kept clean for almost six years until she relapsed back in the latter end of 2018. The singer also has mental health issues. These include bipolar disorder, bulimia, and self-harm.
The talented singer is now doing ok and is reportedly on the mend, with a plethora of stars publicly supporting her in the wake of her recent struggles.
19. Dax Sheppard
Like many young, up and coming Hollywood actors, Dax Shepard was quite the party animal and liked to drink on many occasions. But today, Sheppard is a happily married to Kirsten Bell with a beautiful family, something he credits with his sobriety.
In an anniversary tweet in 2016, he said, “I now have a wife & babies & some self-esteem #gratitude #promises.”
20. Zac Efron
Zac Efron became famous at a young age following the unexpected success of High School Musical Efron and was the It Guy in Tinseltown for many years. But he quickly spiraled into a long period of debauchery. His breakup with first love Vaness Hudgens didn't help either, and he eventually entered rehab in a bid to cure his alcohol and drug addiction in 2013.
Thankfully, this handsome man is now 100% clean. Speaking to Elle magazine in 2016, he said, "You get out of life what you put in. Crossing the line is what leads to greatness.”
21. Kristin Davis
While she made a name for herself as the sweet and earnest Charlotte in the HBO smash series Sex and the City, Kristin Davis couldn't have been further removed from her famous character when she was a drama student in her early 20s.
In a revealing interview with Marie Claire UK, Davis said that she would often turn up to class hungover, wondering if she would even make it past 30. "I realized it was not going to end well. I got into the acting program, it was very challenging, I was hungover and I wasn’t doing so well in my classes. I thought, “Do you know what? It’s going to be one or the other. I can’t really have both," she said.
22. Naomi Campbell
Speaking to Life & Style back in 2013, the English supermodel admitted that she had been teetotal for a long time and that she was better off as a result in an industry where drugs and alcohol are endemic.
“I gave up drinking alcohol,” she said, “Not drinking makes me a lot happier.”
23. Aaron Sorkin
One of Hollywood's most prominent screenwriters has been candid with his past struggles with crack and alcohol and admitted that his addiction was at its worse when writing episodes for the hit show The West Wing in the 1990s.
Years on and Sorkin is thankfully in much better health having sought help, and a decade later he scooped best original screenplay for the 2010 movie, The Social Network.
24. Lana Del Rey
One of the most talented but lachrymose singers in recent years has made a career out of haunting falsettos about breakups, long lost loves, and addiction, things that all played a big part in her teenage years.
In a candid interview with British GQ, the Video Games hitmaker said she turned sober at 20 and after moving to New York City to pursue her music.
25. Leona Lewis
The Bleeding Love singer is another celebrity to have shunned drink. However, unlike others who gave it up because of their addictive personalities, Lewis revealed that she never liked the taste of alcohol.
“I don’t drink—I hate the taste of alcohol. When my debut single [Bleeding Love] went to No.1, I celebrated with non-alcoholic champagne," she said.
26. Calvin Harris
You'd think DJs would be the last people in the world to quit alcohol as it is very much part of the lifestyle, but the Scottish DJ revealed in an interview with the BBC that he couldn't go on living the way he was.
Admitting that the free alcohol was messing with his brain, he said it "was making me ill. It was affecting my brain in the worst way."
27. Eva Mendes
Even all-conquering Latina actresses have their problems, so much so that Hollywood star Eva Mendes entered rehab in 2008 because of her excessive drinking.
She admitted her addiction in an honest and revealing interview with Harpers Bazaar magazine.
28. Daniel Radcliffe
Argubally the world's most famous child star of all time, Daniel Radcliffe has since blossomed from his days as an earnest child actor in Harry Potter to one of the world's most respected thespians. But his teens and early 20s saw him turn to drink to cope with his immense fame and fortune.
Thankfully, the star seems to have come into his own and is now happy and content. "It’s lovely," he told Britain's Daily Telegraph. "I barely think about it [alcohol]."
29. Blake Lively
The Gossip Girl star told the journalist at Allure for her 2012 cover story that she no longer drinks and has never touched drugs. And why would she need to? She's happily married to Ryan Reynolds and has a lovely family.
The level-headed actress explains that "It's just something that I genuinely don't have a desire for." Good on you, Blake! What an inspiration.
30. Kim Kardashian West
While her cohort of sisters are regularly seen partying the night away on their famous reality show and spin-offs, Kim Kardashian West has stayed away from alcohol for some time. Her sister Khloe Kardashian confirmed Kim's sobriety in an interview with Elle and it was a pretty revealing insight into her ambitious persona.
"Kimberly does not drink alcohol whatsoever. Pregnant or not, she's just never been into it," Khloe said.
