Just because an audition doesn't go to plan, that doesn't mean the actor was terrible. Sometimes, casting agents deem them good enough for another role instead, which is what happened to these 10 stars.
Here are 10 famous actors who auditioned for one character but were cast as another.
1. Miley Cyrus
While she is now a bonafide pop superstar, Miley started out as a Disney actress in the wildly popular TV show, Hannah Montanna.
However, though her father is the country superstar Billy Ray Cyrus, that didn't mean she would automatically get lead roles on every TV show. She started out auditioning for smaller roles, including the role of the Hannah Montanna character, Lilly Truscott, before being awarded the namesake's lead role.
2. Jensen Ackles
Over the last 12 years, Jared Padalecki has made the lead character on Supernatural, Sam Winchester, his own and it's hard to imagine anyone else playing Sam. However, casting agents thought otherwise.
Initially, Jensen Ackles was up for the lead role, but in an interview, he admitted that he liked the character of Dean more (Sam's brother) and the role of Sam was given to Padalecki instead.
3. Norman Reedus
Walking Dead is one of the best TV shows AMC have produced, but not many know that it started life out as a comic book series. What's more, Norman Reedus's character Daryl Dixon didn't exist in the comics, leading him to audition for the role of Daryl's brother, Merle.
However, unbeknownst to him, AMC had already given that role to Michael Rooker, but as they were so impressed they decided to create a new character solely for Reedus!
4. Iwan Rheon
Iwan Rheon is doing well for himself playing the villainous Ramsay Bolton on the HBO juggernaut, Game of Thrones, but his fame and paycheque could have been in a whole other league had he landed the role he orginally auditioned for.
Beleive it or not, Rheon told The Telegraph newspaper that it was between himself and Kit Harrington for the lead role of John Snow." "I auditioned for the pilot of Game of Thrones, and was down to the last two for Jon Snow."
5. Shia Labeouf
Shia Labeouf has had a whirlwind career since he started out as a child actor, with his role on Even Stevens bringing him to the attention of casting directors looking for young artists on the Paul Feig series, Freaks and Geeks.
While Labeouf would go onto play Herbert, the school's mascot, he originally auditioned for Neal Schweiber, a part that went to Samm Levine after impressing with a strange William Shatner impression. However, Feig was full of praise for the rising star and revealed to The A.V. Club. "I thought [LaBeouf] was hilarious. Just such a weirdo. He came in with these suspenders on, and he has this weird, adult attitude, but not in that obnoxious way where kids say adult things."
6. Samm Levine
On the topic of Samm Levine, he wasn't auditioning for the role eventually given to him either. In fact, he was reading for the part of Sam Weir, a role that went to John Francis Daley.
On second thoughts, they must have really hated his Shatner impression...
7. Sonequa Martin-Green
Another Walking Dead actor on our list, Sonequa Martin- Green has done an excellent job portraying the courageous Sasha Williams over the years, but the role wasn't the one she read for.
Instead, Sonequa revealed to her Twitter followers that she had actually auditioned for the role of another badass, Michonne but the role went to Dani Gurira.
8. Hank Azaria
Best known for his voice work on The Simpsons, Hank Azaria's acting career hasn't solely been consigned to voiceover work. As well as voicing Moe Szyslak and Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, Hank Azaria has been in various other tv shows and movies over the years, including a reoccurring guest role on Friends as Pheobe's boyfriend, Dave "The Science Guy."
However, Azaria first auditioned for the role of Joey, which as you probably know, ended up going to Matt LeBlanc. Despite this, he auditioned a second time in the hope casting directors might change their minds.
9. Paul Wesley
The Vampire Diaries recently finished after a remarkable 8-season run and introduced us to a host of smoulderingly handsome vampires, including the on-screen brothers Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder. However, Paul Wesley intended to get the lead role of Damion.
Of course, it eventually went to Ian, because he's pretty much the definition of vampirish beauty, but he still impressed directors enough to land the role of Damion's brother, Stefan.
10. Sara Paxton
Sara Paxton auditioned for the lead role in Lizzy McGuire just like fellow blonde actress Hilary Duff. Losing out to Duff, Paxton was still asked to make a few guest appearances on the show.
If you can cast your mind back that far, she played former class president Holly, who would always say "really" every time she opened her mouth.
